Ilfracombe Recce

I love me a good Recce and this one was exceptionally exciting. Most experienced wedding photographers will do a recce unless they are already familiar with the venue or area or if you have paid for a very small package it simply may not be cost effective. Here are some reasons why photographers might do a Recce…

  1. Plan for equipment needs: By visiting the venue beforehand, a photographer can assess what equipment they may need to use for different parts of the day. For example, they may need specific lenses or lighting equipment to achieve the desired results.

  2. Anticipate potential challenges: By doing a site visit, a photographer can identify any potential challenges that may arise on the wedding day, such as difficult lighting conditions, space limitations, or distracting backgrounds. This allows them to plan ahead and be better prepared to capture great photos in any situation. The more experienced a photographer is however they will usually have the equipment to shoot in any lighting condition.

  3. Meet with the wedding planner or venue coordinator: If the photographer has not worked at the venue before, a site visit can be an opportunity to meet with the wedding planner or venue coordinator to discuss logistics and any specific rules or guidelines that may impact photography.

With the above being said I would not rule out a photographer who has not shot at a venue before as someone who is new to shooting at a venue can see things differently (not just shooting in the same spaces out of habit) they can bring a freshness to shooting at a venue and look at it with new creative eyes. Capturing different images that may not have been captured in that space before. Lighting plays a massive part in a wedding day and of course you can not fully predict what the light will do on the day. This is why a photographer may get you to stand in a place which you may think is unremarkable in terms of what’s in the view, but on camera the light might I personality think it is important first and foremost that you like that photographers style of photography, Consider how do they capture images and edit them as ultimately that is what you are going to get. By picking someone simply because they know the area but you don't really like their images is….well pointless and a waste of money.

On this day I was asking the bride to be where the path went through the fields where the marquee was being put on their farm and she said “I’ll take you” , so we hopped on a Quade bike and off we went. It’s not hard to see why you wouldn't want to have your wedding reception anywhere else when you have this view! (See pictures below)

After my meeting I was tourist for a day and looked around Ilfracombe finally seeing Verity by Damien Hirst.
